Reds. Breathless. Windless. Cooking over the fire. All is good.
Beckoning- Utah red rock
The morning was quiet as we approached the arches. And a sliver of light glanced off the top of the rock. Drawn into shades of red.
Arch at Dawn
Painting outside of Moab, as light edges its way through the opening in the rock.

Magic in the water
Into the Heart- Big Sur, Watercolors by Gordon Mayfield, March 4, 2023
Journey, along with me, into the heart of Big Sur. In this latest show, I have painted some of my favorite places in the Wild. Each of us perceives a painting differently , certain features call for our focus. And sometime we lose focus and are consumed by the immediacy and transcendent nature of the experience. Enjoy…
Through the eyes of the Condor
On the Condor hike. I sketched this location and painted a large version in my studio at home. My exhibition — INTO THE HEART—BIG SUR, will be on view at the Venture Gallery in Monterey, March 1—March 31. My reception is on March 4, from 3:30 — 6:30.
The Arch
Morning. Waiting for my paper to dry. Plants, soil and rock cling tenaciously to existence. Water slowly and relentlessly engaging in conversation about change. Working to erode stone monuments.
Mendocino headlands
This morning I painted, situated below the edge of the cliffs, avoiding some of the wind. Sounding waves, birds, wind and sun. Like one of the rocks eroding slightly.
Rock Walls, Big Sur
Clarity of being, no need to search for meaning. I’m part of it.
Wave sound
I painted in Big Sur a few days ago, in one of my favorite locations. It was overcast and calm so I could sit for four hours on the cliffs and paint without too much sun. While my layers were drying, I listened to the wave sound, and my being was immersed in water, rock and sky. I was lost in a good way. I finished the painting in my studio. I like the subtlety and the grey, peaceful aspects of the painting.
